Joseph's Grand Adventures

Here we are approaching Christmas time at Weeks 5 and 6. I apologize that I didn’t do weekly updates, keeping an apartment running with a long stretch of bad sleep doesn’t leave much time to write. Week 5 was mostly uneventful except for the office Christmas party. It was a fun way to bring in the Holiday Season with food, games, and spending time getting to know coworkers outside of work. The only other eventful note about Week 5 was that it rained every day that week, and some of the rain was pretty heavy, This was the longest stint of sustained rain that has happened while I have been here and I can definitely see why people spend the early winter time indoors and take vitamin D supplements. The rain and darkness will definitely get to you if you let it. It is starting to get dark around 3:30 in the afternoon, meaning that I head to work in the dark and drive home in the dark, which is definitely different.

Week 6 has been busier as I am helping to prepare for the quarterly board meeting happening next week. There is a lot of work to do to prepare for this event. Friday night it began to snow and by Saturday morning there was a significant amount of snow on the ground. After taking care of the morning chores, I went out to explore the winter wonderland that was Juneau, Alaska. My adventure began by going to the rifle range and I got to enjoy some time with my M1 Garand. It was nice to get outside and partake in an activity I enjoy. After spending time at the range, I went out to the glacier. It was an enjoyable hike out to the waterfall. I also spent some time sitting and enjoying nature at the glacier’s photo point. The evening ended with a nice bowl of tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich.

I have promised myself that I would make time to enjoy where I am and not begin to take things for granted just because I see it on a daily basis. It is a privilege for me to have the opportunity to see this vast, beautiful place not to mention the chance to live here. Sometimes in the hectiness of life – work, home, chores, etc., we forget to enjoy. It is my hope that I can convey the beauty and such to all of you thru my writing and photos.

I hope everyone is taking some time to reflect on the real reason for the season in the midst of all the preparations.
