August-September Juneau Update

It is my hope everyone is doing well with the unseasonably warm weather in that area.   Maybe it will be the last of the hot temps for this year!   Just so you know, it was a hot 51 degrees on my drive to work this morning.   A few adventures have been had since my last post, and there are a few new adventures coming down the pipe to detail in my next post.

The first adventure was a trip on the Goldbelt Tram to the top of Mount Roberts followed by a short hike to one of the false peaks (a false peak is a spot that acts like the peak of a mountain, but is not the true peak of the mountain).  It was really cool to see all of downtown Juneau from that perspective and it certainly made the cruise ships look super small!   We finally had a full week of sun so after work I would change clothes, take my book and go hang out by Tahku.  Takhu is a lifesize humpback whale statue that was dedicated for the 50th anniversary of Alaska’s statehood.  What I found most interesting about the warm/sunny spell here was how very easy it was to tell the people who have lived in Alaska a long time.   They were pouring sweat!!!  Honestly, I don’t think I broke a sweat the entire week.  It was so nice to get outside and get a little bit of a tan— nothing like what I would have had in Southern Illinois.

The second big adventure was a surprise visit home to celebrate Dad’s 75th birthday!  It was great to have the opportunity to fly home for a long weekend and completely surprise him on the morning of his birthday!  The time in Illinois went by super fast and there wasn’t a dull moment!

I have just completed moving to a new apartment, I am very excited to have more room and all the possibilities a bit more space will allow to happen. I now have a separate bedroom, a large open kitchen,/living room and my own laundry facilities!  (No more laundromat!)    If you would like my updated address, please reach out to my mother and she would be happy to provide you with my new physical address.

I also had the opportunity to go to one of the cabins that is about 30 minutes away via boat and spent the night!   The cabin is part of the Alaska State Park system and is called the Hand Troller’s Cove Cabin. It was a great time and it was a clear night, so I got to see the stars, and watch some sea lion antics.  Definitely got bit by the boat/watercraft bug, so I have begun looking at the options for that to allow for even more fun adventures next summer!

I was hoping this blog post would include details from a helicopter adventure, but after rescheduling 6 times due to weather, we have reached the end of the flying season and that adventure will have to wait until next year.

While there was some decent weather here, I also picked up a new hobby doing spray paint art.  I am still learning techniques, but I am having a blast and enjoying spending the time outside.

There is another trip home in the works and details are pretty close to finalized.  Please reach out to mother for details.

I hope everyone is doing well and look forward to some visiting the next time I am in town.
