Juneau - Pre-Easter Update

What an adventure I have had since the last post!   Last week I was driving home from work, and when I stopped to get gas, noticed an odd smell coming from my Jeep.   After some investigation, I noted that one of the wheels was very hot and deduced that my brake caliper was going out.  That evening was spent acquiring a brake caliper and replacing it.  Luckily, it was sunny that entire week with the temperature around 50 degrees, so it was only cold after the sun went down.  Thankfully,I had most of the job completed before sundown!.

My drive to work has provided some entertainment beginning last week as well!  Bald Eagles are a pretty common sight here in Alaska, to the point often seen when one is driving around.  Well, I have noticed a pair of Eagles that sit on a light pole near one particular intersection when I am driving to work in the morning.  I like to think they are enjoying the Eagle equivalent of a cup of coffee and talking about Eagle things.   Something like, “Hey, Bob, did you see that mouse the other day?  It was huge!”  Takes a sip of coffee before responding, “No I didn’t, Steve, but I did see a tasty looking Salmon!”

I got another chance to see the Northern Lights over the weekend although I almost missed them.  I went out to the glacier since it was supposed to be a good night for the auroras, and was there about an hour without seeing any.  A lot of people were beginning to leave (the glacier is a great spot to watch the auroras since there is little artificial light), and I was thinking about leaving too.  I decided to check the aurora apps one last time and all the apps were saying I should be seeing the lights.  I decided to wait a few more minutes thinking that maybe the app was a little early.  Still wasn’t seeing anything so I started to back out.  As I was backing the car out of the parking spot, I noticed a mild grey streak running across the sky.  I thought it was odd and pulled back into my parking spot, got out my phone, set it to night mode, and took a picture.  What a surprise I got!  The lights were indeed out, just nearly invisible to the naked eye!  It was quite the view!  I ended up staying out for another hour taking pictures and just enjoying the fantastic show!.

Well, I hope everyone is enjoying the prep for Resurrection Sunday, and remembering the reason for the holiday.  Please let me know any of your prayer needs.

P.S. Final preparations are being made for my visit home!  Please reach out and contact either mother or I, we will be happy to provide the details of the visit!

  1. Beautiful lights in the sky. I bet seeing them in person is an awesome sight. I’m sure you are looking forward to coming home for a time…I know your parents are really looking forward to seeing you “in the flesh” and not on a screen.
